Chairback Gap is the valley between Columbus and Chairback mountains, located in the north Maine woods. It is also the name of one of Maine's premiere bluegrass bands. From Lake View Plantation, Maine, Elise and Kevin Sproul, Formerly of "Rare Birds", are joined by Terry Spearrin and Bernie Staples, both from the Skowhegan area, who were in the band, "Good Clean Fill". Drawing on influences as diverse as country, blues, rock, folk, traditional and new bluegrass music, "Chairback Gap's" harmonies and innovative sound will surely please audiences with a wide variety of musical tastes. Catchy original tunes are also included in this band's repertoire. Chairback Gap has recently released a new CD of original and cover tunes entitled, "For the Good Times".

More about the artists:

Elise Sproul - The primary lead vocalist for the band, Elise also plays banjo and guitar. In 1980, while studying at the University of Maine, she started her musical career by performing at coffeehouses and other local venues. Elise is best known for her strong evocative vocals and high tenor harmonies. Her unique banjo and guitar playing help define the CBG sound. Elise also performs with Sweetgrass, a quartet of women musicians.

Kevin Sproul plays mandolin, guitar, and sings lead and harmony vocals for the band. For thirteen years, Kevin, along with his wife Elise, were part of a well-known group called "The Rarebirds". Kevin brings a driving rhythm, innovative flatpicking, and knowledge of various musical styles, which adds the elements of variety and individuality to the CBG groove. Kevin and Elise hail from Brownville, Maine.

Bernie Staples is the main guitarist for Chairback Gap. His high-lonesome vocals add an authentic bluegrass edge to the band. Bernie's tasteful guitar playing, along with his distinctive "Santa Cruz" sound, blend nicely to enhance the CBG sound. His unique sense of humor also adds to the band's performances. Bernie is a lifelong resident of Norridgewock, Maine.

Terry Spearrin plays bass and sings lead and harmony vocals for Chairback Gap. Originally from Millinocket, Terry and Kevin met as youngsters while camping. Years later, Terry and Kevin bumped into each other while browsing at a store in central Maine, and an old musical friendship was re-established. With rock solid timing and killer tone, Terry's bass playing lays the foundation for the CBG sound.
