AUGUSTA, Maine - Roland D. Martin, Commissioner of the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife announced today that he has designated February 6-8, 2004, as Maine's Inaugural Open Snowmobile Weekend. Maine Law authorizes the Commissioner to designate one weekend a year as an open snowmobile weekend when snowmobiles legally registered outside the state may be used in State without being registered in Maine. The free snowmobile weekend is designed to give snowmobilers from outside of Maine a chance to experience some of Maine's 13,000 miles of groomed trails. "It's a great opportunity for snowmobilers from outside of the state to see just what Maine has to offer," said Martin. Any snowmobile that is legally registered in another state or province can snowmobile throughout Maine on February 6, 7, and 8 without a Maine registration. All other regulations concerning snowmobiling in Maine apply. "This weekend is designed to give snowmobilers a taste of Maine, and hopefully, riders will come back to Maine, wanting more than just a weekend on our trails," said Colonel Tim Peabody of the Maine Warden Service. When riding on Maine's trails, riders are encouraged to Ride Right, Ride Sober, and Ride Safe. "We want people to enjoy the snow, but we also want them to ride safely when snowmobiling in Maine," said Peabody. The Maine Warden Service oversees the safety of all snowmobile riders in the state. |
